A friend said to me yesterday that their aim is to get back to “firing on all cylinders” and it's fair to say my mind has gotten a bit carried away with the metaphor…
I think “firing on all cylinders” is not only a great metaphor but a great goal to have as it means you'll be performing at your best
But firstly, how many people do you know who have felt like they haven't been firing on all cylinders for weeks, months, or even years?
Perhaps you feel that way?
Now let's take the metaphor a step further…
Perhaps we can get back to firing on all cylinders with a thorough service or bit of a tune-up
(Though maybe it's time for a more thorough overhaul, a full re-build, re-commissioning, or restoration?!)
Or how about not just firing on all cylinders - how about installing a bigger engine?!
4 cylinder? Time for a V8…or a V12!
Want more performance?
How about adding a turbo?
How about at the same time becoming more fuel efficient?
Need to be equipped for different terrain, journeys or challenges? No problem - all optional extras and you can create your own personal specification.
Make it a custom-build.
Of course, once you have this high performance machine it's going to need looking after:
> Regularly servicing
> The right care and maintenance
> The optimal fuel
> Washing and cleaning (hopefully that's a given!)
> Fluids draining (sorry, couldn't resist!)
> You'll have to monitor the gauges and the diagnostics
Having all this performance at your disposal of means you can go on all sorts of adventures - and you'll be ready and capable for whatever conditions life throws at you
But you can also just cruise around knowing that all that power and potential is there for whenever you need it and want to use it
Going round “redlining” it all the time is likely to lead to “internal combustion”; you're exposing yourself (and others) to serious risk of injury and you'll burn through your fuel very quickly…but every engine needs revving from time to time!!!
Please do feel free to reply with your own suggestions to add to this and my amusement!
