“Personal training” had not been in my mind when I first started University. I went into it like most other Sport Science students, wanting a job in elite sport. I soon realised these were few and far between. In my second year it became clear to me I wanted to be involved in health and fitness of the general public, rather than the elite.
Cue the frantic post-university job searching at the end of my third year which lead me to send my CV off to Darren, here at Motus. The initial attraction was the job title of trainee personal trainer/coach, I thought this could be a great way to start my involvement in the health and fitness industry. Once I began researching the company I found that Motus was perfect for me. Approaching health and fitness in a new way compared to most generic commercialised gyms. I was given the impression Motus were very client centred, taking a view of the whole person rather than just providing them with a standardised training program. By the time of my interview I really wanted to secure the internship, after around 2 hours of questioning with Darren I left happy with how I did. Luckily I had a busy few weeks post-exams planned, so this kept my mind off constantly checking my emails (well maybe…). The day came around that my degree results were due, and Darren managed to get it off to the best possible start as I was told I had secured the internship. I might have actually done a little happy dance, but that probably shouldn't be publicised.
After university had finished and the big graduation day had been and gone. I now had something post-uni life to look forward too. August quickly came round and I moved to Stratford Upon Avon to start my journey here at Motus. I have to say I loved it. Well mostly...the lack of caffeine and early mornings are something I'm still getting used too! In one month I had a range of experiences from seeing the individual approaches taken by each trainer in the studio, attending meetings about the corporate well-being programmes, helping Kim with nutritional research, shadowing Mel in her Physio clinic and being able to develop my own knowledge on programme design. I began to realise that this is not a ‘normal' career, this is something that can actually make a massive difference to someone's life. It may sound cheesy, but to make this level of difference and help someone feel better in themselves or even live longer is what I've always wanted to do with my life. I knew that Motus would allow me to do this and also allow me to continue my personal development. And luckily Darren thought so too.
I'm now ready to start developing my knowledge both in and outside the studio. Throughout the next 2 years, the plan is develop into a fully fledged Motus employee, with all the knowledge I could ever need! To do this I'm going to split my time between training clients in the studio, completing courses on training and nutrition, and helping out with all the admin, planning and marketing that goes on behind the scenes - hopefully to gain a better understanding of Motus overall. I'm looking forward to starting my new journey at Motus, along the way starting to embrace the early mornings, and learn that I maybe don't need all those cups of tea….
