“I have been thinking about the difference between motivation and discipline with regard to health and fitness. I am guessing all around the country there are people who previously believed that they couldn't exercise or eat more healthily due to a lack of time have discovered that isn't actually the case: some people suddenly have move time on their hands now - or at least more control over how they spend it - and yet if anything maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise is probably harder at the moment than when we have the “luxury” of normal life and a routine to follow! What they haven't done is figured out how to create an environment within which they can improve and how to stay on track.
Lots has been written about motivation and discipline and the difference between the two. For me, I am motivated to play games like tennis and I love being outside (Amanda is convinced I was a retriever in a previous life!) but I don't love the exercise I know I need to do day-to-day:I don't love yoga, I don't love stretching.
This is why I work with you guys because having the appointment means I definitely do it, I never hit the snooze button on training, it happens. More importantly though is the unwavering support and focus I get from messaging app chats with you – “how's the food?” “have you stretched?” “have you seen this article?” etc etc and that's the real reason I have emailed, what I really want to say is thank you for always keeping me focussed on my health and fitness goals, I value your skill in persuading me to do one more set but I value this support and accountability a lot more.”
